Portfolio
These are all the final projects from this class.
1. In class sculpture project, "have you seen this person"
Just as a reminder of my thought process I put in my explanation for this project. My final piece for Project 1 turned out to be a comment on the objects made in the sculpture. I was interested in the fact that most of the choices made are very culture typical. It makes me wonder what the sculpture would look like if it was made by a completely different culture. Maybe not necessarily by a culture outside of the US (even though that of course would be interesting to see) but what about a different generation. Is that a different culture? Or do they just see it differently. I think it is interesting that the objects/foods that were chosen could potentially define someone in that culture, it sounds bland but the typical american hot dog, cookie, corn, apple, car (and even a donut which was not in my final piece) are things that to me come to mind when thinking of US culture. I hope this makes some kind of sense.
2. Text, "Bumper-stickers"
Well I was thinking about making bumper sticker statements! Another idea that I have played around with is IGNORANCE. I have done another piece about it in the past and decided to think about it again! This is how the questions were inspired.

4. Book, "Then-Now, Now-Then"
The inspiration for this book can best be explained by the first page of the book, it talks about how much really changes overtime and if that means our perception of cultures do not change either. The book compares parts of Egypt from when I went this summer to when my Grandfather went many years ago.
5. Layers, "Flying by"
The layers project went through many phases, I decided to settle on a something new for me, an animated GIF file. I wanted to experiment with the type of file and see if it would work. My intensions were to show many different women and their identity flying by. I think that as time goes by and cultures mesh and people become more "normal" our identities are fading and essentially flying back to were you have to look very closely and carefully to see them properly.

Artist Statement
This is the artist statement we had to write for senior seminar and I figured since I have a blog I might as well post it right!? Well let me know what you think and if it makes sense! I realize it needs some work and will probably be ever changing....cause I have trouble making up my mind on these things... but its a pretty good representation on how I feel... I think.... feedback is appreciated!
In my work I aim to both expose and criticizes culture. I am inspired by the opportunity I have had to not only live in multiple different cultures but also to see the world and experience other ways of life. This has led me to believe that the key to understanding those who live around us is to examine the culture from which they came. Since very few cultures have escaped the effects of globalization each individual culture tends to have an effect on others. We live in a global world but we have an ignorance of other cultures that causes contemporary problems. Therefore my images intend to show and teach about other ways of life.
I create two separate types of images. One kind is the traditional photograph that is a presentation of other cultures. My other images show an interplay between multiple photographs, or photographs and text. The text I use enforces the viewer to receive a clear understanding of my message. The phrases I use are rarely ambiguous. I chose photography because I use it as a form of documentation. But documentation is not my art, rather the photograph combined with the concept is my art.
The process in which I create such images includes a range of different techniques. It usually begins with the photographing of landscapes, monuments, and the people of a culture in their natural environments. My photographic process could best be described as guerilla art. I use this form because the camera changes the way I am viewed, when the people I photograph see the camera they associate me with the ignorant tourist when rather I am trying to authentically present their way of life. I proceed with the documenting my experience in text and converse with people about their particular lifestyle as much as possible. This gives me the ability to learn as much as possible about a culture and helps me build an understanding of its reasoning. Because I can use this secretive form of guerilla photography and have the opportunity to see so many different cultures my images can introduce new ideas and concepts to people who would not have the chance to see them. I believe that if you have the ability to know something and do not want to know, that is ignorance. Some people justify their ignorance with the excuse of not having the ability or opportunity to see and experience something. My goal is to minimize that inability and to show my personal experience in hope that it sparks people’s interest in other cultures of this world as well as understanding the hypocrisies of their own world.

Books books books! Time time time!
Once again a list of ideas!!
1. Continue with the bumper stickers-- If i made each page of a book its own image of a bumper sticker on the car it would be viewed differently then if it was on the wall and would therfore not have to be as big because books are usually viewed from closer up. I would make the format something smaller like 4x4 or 5x5. They would be viewed individually so each statement would get consideration but they would still be viewed as a series because of the book format.
2. Book comparing cultures-- Inspired by a book i have comparing New York and Frankfurt... I like the format it uses, here is a picture of the cover!
I would replace the cities with two cultures that I have images from I could chose between, China, Egypt, Africa, or Argentina vs. the US or Germany
3. I could also use a similar format to compare the changes or lack of changes there are in one culture through out time... I have images from my trip to Egypt this summer and also went through a few of my grandfathers dias he took in 1983 and 1990.
--The main question here is how to get the dias into digital form and still keeping most of the quality.
4. Museum collection-- Inspired by the moma collection book I have
--because of my obsession with cultures I have started a collection of what seem like random things that all are from different parts of the world i could photograph these and present them as museum pieces, which i guess they kind of could be the anja museum of culture hehe! I think i would use a simple format like the one in the moma book because the objects are the important thing and then put a short desription to to some of them. This is what the moma book looks like:
5. Every trip i go on i take a daily journal so I can make my travel journal into a presentable book, i could use China, Egypt, or the Kilimanjaro trip (Tanzania, Africa)
Right now I think I am leaning towards idea 2, 3, or 4.....I really cant decide and feel like doing them all.....time is a serious problem!!!!!!
