This summer in Germany i went to the new art museum in Munich (The Brandhorst collection) (it is a fantastic museum by the way i spent many many many hours there and could have been there longer) and became strangely obsessed with Cy Twombly. I had seen his work before in the Menil Collection in Houston and liked it but was never as drawn to it as I was in Munich. Well I have now seen the two largest collections of Twombly and love it!!!! Anyway....back to the whole text thing... Twombly uses a calligraphic or graffiti style in his art. It seems like just random marks on a canvas or paper (which is why i was at first not as interested) but when looking closer and knowing the background of each piece he makes the weight of the lines and the randomness mean something. He somehow makes his marks more or less tense and frantic and sometimes even calm. Most of his works allude to some classical subject or a time in history. My favourite (once again nothing to do with text...oh well) is in the Brandhosrt collection, it is about a sea battle, when you really look at it you can really see it! his gestural makes (kinda like swirls) remind of a stream of consciousness.... just on going thought. He is really an amazing artist.....! For images from the entire Brandhorst collection aand of course Twombly images to check out....

I am a huge fan of Twombly and it is rare to meet a student who appreciates him, so kudos! I think you have a good understanding of his work and I am happy you have had the chance to see them in person, I take it you've seen the pieces they have at the Philadelphia Museum of Art?
